Amyloid plaque (red plaque in the middle picture) is known as a cause of Alzheimer’s dementia triggering cognitive disorder and dysphasia due to damages in cerebral cortex, speech-control centers of the brain, and the hippocampus that controls memory. Currently, an agent that can disintegrate plaque is yet to be developed. However, stem cell can disintegrate the plaque. Reduction of the amount of amyloid in parts of cerebrum has been observed after stem cell treatment. Stem cell also can improve symptoms of dementia or suppress its progression..

Morris water maze test after 13 times of stem cell administration to Tg2576 mouse (Alzheimer's model)
In the experiment, the mouse with dementia was unable to recognize the pedestal in the tank, and thus continued to swim around (L). However, the mouse receiving stem cell treatment immediately searched for the pedestal (R). In the above experiment, the cognitive and physical functions of the rats after stem cell treatment increased by 23.4%, while lifespan increased by 31.3%, indicating that the use of stem cells was effective in treating dementia.
